The Revit file format system plays an important role in storing and managing BIM project information, helping to optimize workflows and improve overall efficiency.

In this blog, BIMCAD Vietnam will provide a detailed overview of the main file formats in Revit, including RVT, RTE, RFT, and RFA, along with their benefits and practical applications in BIM projects.

Main File Formats in Revit

RVT File

RVT – Revit Project File

The RVT format is the primary file type used to store the entire Revit model, including geometric data and project-related information.

  • Advantages:
Allows easy design modifications, which are automatically updated across all project views such as floor plans, sections, elevations, 3D views, and schedules.
  • Disadvantages:
File sizes can be larger compared to traditional CAD applications.

RTE File

RTE – Revit Project Template File

RTE files are used as the starting point for creating a new Revit project. Users can begin with one of the built-in templates available in the Revit library and then customize it according to their office standards to save time and effort when setting up project settings.

  • Advantages:
Provides a ready-made project foundation with predefined settings, specifications, and project structures.
  • Disadvantages:
When editing and saving an RTE file, you must specify a new file name and location instead of overwriting the existing template file.

RFT File

RFT – Revit Family Template File

The RFT file format is used to store a family template, which serves as the starting framework for creating reusable components (families) in Revit projects.
An RFT file contains predefined settings and parameters that define the family type, such as dimensions, geometry, materials, and behavior.

Advantages:
Helps create consistent Revit families that follow established design standards.

Disadvantages:
RFT files are generally not intended to be modified directly. However, users can create their own custom templates by saving a configured setup as an RFT file.

File RFA

RFA – Revit Family File

The RFA file format is used to store the geometry and data of a Revit component (family). These families represent reusable building elements such as doors, windows, furniture, equipment, and other parametric components within a Revit model.

Advantages:
Allows reusable Revit components to be applied across multiple projects, improving efficiency and consistency.

Disadvantages:
Models contained in .RFA files are not backward compatible. This means a family created or modified in a newer version of Revit cannot be opened in earlier versions of the software.
