Depending on the project's information standard and agreed requirements, a naming convention may use structured fields representing information such as: Project + Originator + Volume/System + Level/Location + Type + Role/Discipline + Number

For example, a project might define a structure similar to: PRJ-ABC-ZZ-XX-M-0001

The exact structure should always be established through the project's information requirements and agreed standards.

The important principle is not memorizing one filename. It's creating a consistent information classification system.

The Role of the Common Data Environment


Naming conventions become even more powerful when combined with a properly configured Common Data Environment (CDE). A CDE provides a controlled environment for managing project information.

Instead of files being scattered across:

  • Email attachments
  • Personal computers
  • WhatsApp groups
