With the continuous advancement of technology, BIM has evolved and integrated many new elements, leading to concepts such as 4D, 5D, 6D, 7D, and 8D. Many of you may already be familiar with 3D BIM, but have you ever heard of or explored BIM 4D, 5D, 6D, 7D, and 8D?
Let’s explore the current BIM levels with BIMCAD Vietnam in the article below!
BIM (Building Information Modeling) is a process of creating models that contain both graphical and non-graphical information within a Common Data Environment (CDE). It involves the use of 3D modeling tools to digitally represent all aspects of a project and manage the information associated with them. This approach helps improve accuracy and efficiency in project management while reducing the risk of errors.
BIM (Building Information Modeling) includes eight levels, commonly referred to as BIM 2D, 3D, 4D, 5D, 6D, 7D, and 8D. These levels relate to the addition and management of information throughout the different stages of a project, including design, construction, and building operation.

The 8 Levels of BIM
2D BIM refers to a two-dimensional digital geometric model that includes information such as objects, materials, technical specifications, and other elements related to a construction project. 2D CAD initially provided greater convenience and higher accuracy when creating two-dimensional drawings and models compared to traditional manual drafting on drawing boards.
More advanced modeling tools now allow the addition of parameters, constraints, and conceptual data to 2D models. However, most of the construction industry does not consider 2D geometric models to be true BIM.
3D BIM is a three-dimensional digital geometric model that is linked with information related to objects, materials, technical specifications, and other elements in a construction project. 3D modeling tools have been highly successful for several reasons:
All of these features significantly improve accuracy and efficiency, while reducing the risk of errors in construction projects.
4D BIM involves adding schedule information to the model to represent the sequence of construction processes. The addition of this time dimension allows the project team to visualize how the construction will be carried out. From a contractor’s perspective, this is extremely important.
4D BIM was a significant advancement for the construction industry when it was first implemented through the use of new modeling tools. It demonstrated collaboration between design and construction teams through the coordination and sharing of 3D models.
5D BIM is a 4D model that integrates cost information, including cost estimation, resource consumption, and project cost control. When discussing 5D BIM, it is important to clearly define specific requirements, such as: Are the costs estimated before tendering, or are they records of the final as-built costs? Who is responsible for adding and managing this cost information?Which cost measurement methods are being used?
6D BIM is a development from the 5D BIM model. The 6D BIM model expands control to include energy-related factors both inside and outside the building. Designers use it to manage parameters related to the building’s energy performance, temperature, and lighting.
7D BIM is considered an extended BIM model that integrates detailed information about the equipment used in a building, in order to support maintenance and facility management during the operational phase of the project.
8D BIM is a dimension of BIM that adds health and safety information to the geometric model of a building during the design and construction stages.
